Burgos is a surprisingly small place for somewhere that is a city. It has barely spread out from the constraints of its medieval limits and feels very much like a provincial town. Which is all it would have been had it not been home to one of Spain’s most important Gothic cathedrals. A main stopover point on the route to Compostela, and the capital of old Castile — the county, later a kingdom, which had so dominated the Iberian peninsula over the past thousand years
